Frontier: Origin
The word Frontier is borrowed from the economics literature on production possibilities and technological frontiers, where it describes the outer boundary of what is technically achievable.
Applied to AI, the frontier is not a fixed line but a moving one: a model that sits at the frontier today becomes the baseline against which future systems are measured

The distinction lies in scope & function
Frontier Model
Refers to the specific large-scale AI system, eg GPT-5.5, Claude Opus 4.8, characterized by
📍 massive parameter counts (trillions)
📍 extreme training costs
📍 state-of-the-art performance in
📍 reasoning &,multimodal tasks
These models are considered as the brain or engine
Frontier AI
Encompasses the entire infrastructure, including the specialized hardware (GPUs, cooling), the applications built on top of the models, the safety and security protocols (like red-teaming), and the regulatory policies designed to manage the risks associated with these powerful systems.
In short, the frontier model is the "cutting-edge" technology itself, while frontier AI is the practical implementation and societal context of that technology
